A Note from Principal Seth: Listening, Learning, and Growing Together

Dear Families,
As your new principal, I’m spending this first year on a "listening and learning tour" so I can really get to know the heart of our school. Every family here brings something special from our different towns and neighborhoods, and our staff and students bring so many wonderful talents, backgrounds, and interests to the table. Rather than rushing in to change things up, I want to take the time to listen, learn, and build on what’s already working so well through a four-step plan:
  • Summer (Doing My Homework): Digging into our school’s history, programs, and past progress to get a clear starting picture.
  • Fall (Listening & Learning): Sitting down with families, staff, kids, and neighbors through chats, surveys, and coffee hours to hear what’s on your mind.
  • Winter (Putting Heads Together): Taking everything you shared and turning it into clear goals, schedules, and plans for next school year.
  • Spring (Trying Things Out): Rolling out a few small test projects based directly on what you told us our students and families need most.
Your voice matters so much in this work, and I can’t wait to pull up a chair and visit with you during our fall chats. Thank you for making me feel so welcome—I’m so glad to be partnering with you all!
Warmly,
Seth

Help Us Build Our Family Survey!

Hearing from you is essential to making our school the best it can be. Moving forward, we plan to send out a family survey twice a year to check in on how we’re doing and where we can improve. To make sure these surveys truly reflect what matters most to you, we are gathering input on the questions from our families, students, and community members.
We’ll be looking at key areas like communication, academics, programming, social-emotional support, safety, after-school activities, and transportation. While I’ll be gathering feedback from our PTO and School Council, I want to invite everyone to share their thoughts! If there is a specific question or topic you’d like to see included in our upcoming survey, please email your suggestions to me directly at seth.lewislevin@bhrsd.org.

Drop off and Pick up

BHRSD Community,

I'm writing with a reminder about safety at drop off and pick up.  We need to do better.

If possible, consider having your children ride a bus.  If not, try to come a bit earlier to relieve some of the pressure and rush of drop off and pick up.

In particular, please pay attention and make sure you stop at the pedestrian crossing between Du Bois and Muddy Brook.

Thanks for your efforts in making this whole process safer and more manageable.

Please reach out to me if you have additional suggestions.

Peter Dillon, Superintendent

Sports Equipment Drive

Hello! I'm Sage Kruh, an 8th grader at DuBois, and I'm running a sporting equipment drive to collect used items for kids in Berkshire County. From now until Thanksgiving Break, there will be a collection box near the main office at school, and we are looking for basketballs, indoor soccer balls, baseball bats and helmets, t-ball gloves, swim goggles, sport-specific shoes, ice skates, cones, and other equipment. Please only donate items in relatively good condition, and thank you so much for giving.

All parents/guardians of 5th and 7th-grade students please read through this upcoming screening notice from Nurse Robyn:

WEB DuBois Middle School
State-Mandated Health Screenings — Notice to Parents/Guardians
RE: State-Mandated Health Screenings

5th & 7th Grade Vision, 7th Grade Hearing, SBIRT, Height/Weight

TO: Parents/Guardians of all 5th and 7th grade DuBois Middle School Students
This notice informs you of upcoming health screenings, beginning October 27th and continuing through the year until complete.
Height/Weight (7th grade)
Conducted individually and privately by the school nurse. The school reports non-identifying data to the state.
Vision (5th & 7th grade)
Conducted by the nurse in the Health Office. Students should bring glasses/contacts if needed. If your child sees an eye doctor annually, notify me and the exam will be waived.
Hearing (7th grade)
Conducted by the nurse. If your child is under a hearing specialist's care, notify me and the exam will be waived.
SBIRT
A brief, confidential one-on-one screening conducted by health teacher Ms. Hannah Gaschott, using the CRAFFT tool (adopted by MA DPH/DESE) to identify early risk behaviors around alcohol/substance use and support healthy choices.
This is preventive, not disciplinary — results are not placed in your student's school file or health record.
To opt out of any or all screenings, or if you have questions, please contact me by October 23rd:

Arrivals and Dismissals

Arrival and Dismissal
Being on time and prepared for the school day can make the difference between an excellent day and a tough game of catch-up. Please help us in ensuring your tweens and teens are in Crew to get set-up before 7:50AM. Pro-tips: have their backpacks and "fits" ready the night before and wake them up five minutes earlier than they think they need!

Arrival--Our doors open at 7:40AM. We will have breakfast in a warm caf to start their day. Students arriving after 7:50 will be marked as tardy. Tardies equal falling behind from the start.

Fifth and sixth-grade students should be dropped off in front of the building. Seventh and Eighth-grade students should be dropped off in the rear parking lot. If you have students in both these levels, please use the front for drop off.

Dismissal--School is dismissed at 2:40PM. Students going to CLEO will be prepared for the transition into snack.

Only buses should go into the bus loop. All parent pick-ups are in the back parking lot.

Dismissal to Muddy Brook
Students who will be picked up at Muddy Brook at Muddy Brook’s dismissal time may stay after school. We will have staff specifically assigned to monitor this group of students and keep track of who is present. Students will be brought over to Muddy Brook at 3:15PM.
